There are so many wonderful places that are fabulous to visit and there are some leaflets on the area for you to look at.

We are on the Cleveland Way and you can walk all the way into Whitby if you wanted to!

Here are a few suggestions ….

STAITHES (1.5 miles away)

Lovely small harbour of Staithes which you can walk to from the house in 25 mins approx from your cottage.  Couple of fab pubs and tea rooms .. you won’t be disappointed.rch with you if you are going in the evening .. you may need it!

RUNSWICK (3.5 miles away)

This is a lovely bay and if the weather is nice I would recommend this as a beach for the day. It has café / pub / toilets .. and a super beach.

SKINNINGROVE MINE & BEACH (7 miles away)

If you have dogs this is a great beach. There is also the Ironstone Mining Experience which is definitely worth a visit.

SALTBURN BY THE SEA (8 miles away)

Another seaside town but a lot smaller than Whitby, but the Fish & Chips are the best!   Great beach and prefect for surfers. You can take the funicular lift .. the oldest water balanced cliff lift still in operation in Britain.

SANDSEND (8.5 miles away)

Surfing, sailing and windsurfing are popular sports off the beaches between Sandsend and Whitby. Couple of fabulous cafes and pubs.

ROSEBERRY TOPPING WALK (10 miles)

Although not actually a mountain it is pretty spectacular to walk up & at the top there are great views. Once you reach the top this forms part of the Cleveland Way as well but you might just want to have a hike up to the top, enjoy the views & then head back down for a drink/food at the pub!

WHITBY (11 miles away)

Whitby … a wonderful fishing town with plenty of things to do and interesting history to explore. Boat rides, fishing trips, shops, amusement arcades, restaurants, pubs, museums.

Included in Whitby’s historical features is St. Hilda’s Abbey. Overlooking the town, settled on the East Cliff, the abbey was originally founded during the seventh century.

The Whitby Spa has a cinema as well as hosting all sorts of entertainment such as music weekend festivals / plays / musicals / bands etc – www.whitbypavilion.co.uk

GROSMONT (14 miles away)

Lovely village which is a great place to visit or place to go walking. Take a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and you can also visit the engine sheds and see the world’s oldest passenger railway tunnel, built by railway pioneer George Stephenson. Great place for walking as well. Pubs and Cafes.

THE LION INN, BLAKEY RIDGE (15 miles away)

Blakey Ridge, Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, YO62 7LQ … worth visiting this 16 th century pub for a drink or bite to eat ..  a wow factor inside as so old. Food is good value .. hearty portions. You could take your bikes up there as lots of cycling tracks along a disused railway.

HUTTON LE HOLE YO62 6UA (17 miles away – and down the road from The Lion)

Popular scenic & picturesque village with museum, pub, café and also a chocolate factory where you can watch the chocs being made as well as tasting! The museum contains 13 rescued and reconstructed historic buildings, including an Iron Age round house, period shops, thatched cottages, an Elizabethan manor house, barns and craft workshops. They display the lives of ordinary people, up to the present day.

FALLING FOSS WATERFALL & MIDGEHALL TEA GARDEN (16 miles away)

Lovely magical woodland walk. There is a 2 mile circular route that passes an idyllic woodland tea garden and the 30-foot Falling Foss waterfall or you can just go direct to the tea room which is through the woods and by the waterfall.

ROBIN HOODS BAY (17 miles away)

Robin Hood’s Bay is home to sandy & family friendly beaches, fossils and the Dinosaur Coast, coastal and countryside walks and cycleways, great places to eat, drink and stay as well as fantastic shops, visitor attractions and a variety of themed weekends, festivals and events.

GOATHLAND (18 Miles away)

Goathland is a small village in the North Yorkshire Moors The pretty village was where the series Heartbeat was filmed. It was the 1960s fictional Aidensfield village .. and Scripps Garage is still set up for tourists.

Have a pint in the Aidensfield Arms (Goathland Hotel) which was the original pub in Heartbeat. The Steam Train stops here.

SCARBOROUGH (30 miles away)

Scarborough is a resort town on England’s North Sea coast. Its 2 bays with sandy beaches are split by a headland bearing the 12th-century Scarborough Castle. The Victorian Central Tramway funicular train links the town centre with South Bay and its harbour. Lots of things to do here … The Rotunda Museum, SEA LIFE Sanctuary, Outside Concerts, Waterparks and more.

EDEN CAMP (Malton 38 miles away)

A good place to visit is Eden Camp which is a Modern History Theme Museum which will transport you back to experience the sights, sounds and smells of wartime Britain. All within the grounds of an original POW Camp.

DURHAM CITY (49 miles away)

If you haven’t been to Durham then it is definitely worth a visit. It is a city south of Newcastle. The river loops around the Cathedral and Castle. It is rather like York but different! Take one of the hour long river cruises which is great if weather is nice.

YORK (56 miles away)

If you have time go to York. Fabulous city steeped in history but also great shops. Take a river cruise or visit York Minster and also enjoy the shopping!

BEAMISH (inbetween Durham and Newcastle 60 miles away)

Another good day out is the Beamish Living Museum. This is an open air museum telling the story of life in the North East of England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s.

WALKERS

Cleveland Way – this goes from outside the house to Whitby, Robins Hood Bay and then inland . Cleveland Way is a National Trail and runs 110 miles between Helmsley and the Brigg at Filey, skirting the North York Moors National Park. You can start it from here as we are right on the path!

If you only want to do a bit – I can recommend walking from here to Sandsend … about 3.5 hrs. Or other way – take the bus and walk back!

If you are looking for a day out and a walk a bit further afield (an hour away) or do on your way home …  how about doing a walk around Sutton Bank. Fabulous walks and fews and pubs along the way!
